Begin with a venture plan Some small business owners are adopting a working from home approach.

The first step to starting your successful new enterprise is map out your ideas in a way that you have accommodating objectives over the period that it will require to get the enterprise up and running.

According to Ray Gaines, the author of Start Your Own Business, people who plan to begin their own enterprise on their own should meticulously consider all aspects of the venture before taking any actual action. Among the things that you will need to take into account are:

• Financing – Make a list of all possible sources of capital for your new venture. Start off with those closest around you like family and friends. Once you have some seed cash it is easier to get loans and other investments from more traditional business sources. Basically the more resources you already own, the more straightforward it is to get new financing. Try to calculate how many rounds of financing you will need to get you on your feet. As your business develops, you should be able to access more money.

• Studying the competition – Unless you have a totally innovative product or service, there is already competition out there waiting for your prospective business. Even if you have a highly innovative patented concept, it will not be long before competitors rise out of the woodwork. Make as rational and balanced appraisal of the competition as possible. Also try to appreciate what others who have successful enterprises similar to yours are doing well. You will want to emulate what they do right, but avoid any mistakes that you notice as well. Gaines notes that you should attempt to construct your own niche market. Make your product or service at least a little different than anything else offered in the same marketplace.

• Marketing – For any venture to thrive, it must first be noticed. Advertising and marketing are crucial for most businesses to get off the ground. The exception may be cases where you already have an existing consumer base.
